Troubleshooting Common Problems
When I select a media file, nothing happens or I hear a "click."
If you recently cleared your cookies or have not selected a player, a pop-up window will open to ask for your player preference. If you hear a "click" or "pop" when you select a media file, please set your pop-up blocker to allow BIRF.info to launch windows.
A player window opens, but the video doesn't start.
You may need to change your firewall settings to permit streaming media. You can also adjust your player's transport settings to view BIRF.info video. Every site encodes and serves their media a little differently, so even if your player works on some sites, you may experience errors on BIRF.info, and vice versa.
My browser tries to download a ".smil" or ".php" file.
These files are used to deliver audio to your computer, but do not contain the sound itself. In the case of ".smil" files, please make sure that you have RealPlayer installed, or select WindowsMedia as your player instead (see above). In the case of ".php" files, please "left-click" or open audio links and do not try to save them to your computer.
I click an audio link, and get only a blank page.
Early versions of Internet Explorer 5.0 for the Macintosh have a bug that prevents them from opening certain kinds of audio links. You can fix this problem by upgrading your browser to Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.
Video Captioning
To enable/disable captioning in RealPlayer 8 and earlier: select Preferences by right-clicking in the video display window. Select the Content tab. Choose Settings from the Accessibility section at the bottom. Check (or uncheck to disable) the "Use accessibility features when available" checkbox. Select OK, then OK again in the Preferences window. You will need to restart the video for your changes to take effect.
For RealOne: Start the RealOne player. Select "Preferences" from the Tools menu at the top. Click on "Content" in the left pane, and check the box that says "Use supplemental text captioning when available."
More Solutions for Real Player
Check RealPlayer’s online status setting.
RealPlayer detects online status by default. If this detection fails, RealPlayer may be incorrectly set to Work Offline mode. If you are using a network connection or have a cable modem or DSL connection, you can override this detection and force RealPlayer to assume you are online all the time.
To change the online status of RealPlayer:
1. On the Tools menu, click Preferences. The Preferences box opens.
2. In the Category pane, click Connection.
3. Click the Assume I am online option.
4. Click OK to save your changes.
5. Restart RealPlayer.
Configure your personal firewall or security software to allow RealPlayer access to the Internet.
Firewalls must be configured to allow realplay.exe to have two-way access to the Internet before audio or video can be played. Consult the manufacturer of your firewall software if you are unsure how to grant this access.
Verify that your corporate firewall or proxy allows RealPlayer access to the Internet.
Corporate local area networks (LANs) or commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs) often use a firewall or proxy to limit traffic and protect their users' computers from unauthorized access. If these ports are specifically restricted by your firewall, you will need to configure your Connection Preferences to use your firewall’s settings.
By default, the RealPlayer uses the following ports to connect:
TCP 80, 554, 4040, 7070, 8080, 443 (SSL forsign-in), 1755 (MMS Windows Media requests)
UDP 6970-32,000, 1755 (MMS Windows Media resend requests)
HTTP 80 (AU, Messaging Service, and HTTP Cloaking)
RealPlayer configurations will override these defaults. Contact your network administrator for further assistance.
