Who is at risk?
Most brain injuries occur among children, adolescents, young adults, and those over the age of 75. The incidence of TBI peaks in the age group 15–30 years, and is more common in males (male : female ratio, 3–4: 1). Much of this sex difference is thought to be related to risk-taking behavior and is therefore potentially preventable.
Children are especially at risk in the afternoon hours after school, weekends, and summertime, with most injuries occurring on the roads or at home.
Alcohol is associated with up to half of all cases of TBI.
