HMN: Living Room, Dining Room

Last Updated:

Dining/Living Room

This section should contain:

1. Simple floor plan noting:

  • Width & length of room
  • Whether doors open in or out
  • Heights of favorite chair (arms present?) and sofa
  • Width of doors (inside of frame)
  • Flooring (wood, vinyl, carpet, tile) & presence of doorsill
  • Lighting sources (overhead, lamps) and electrical outlets

It may be helpful to do this on graph paper to scale 1 square = ¼ foot.

2. Photos of room, especially entry/exit to other rooms, halls, kitchen, etc.

3. Recommendation for Dining/Living

  • Make sure the tables allow for the fit of the wheelchair so that the individual can enjoy meals with family and friends.
  • Arrange furniture to promote face-to-face socialization from the wheelchair and viewing of the TV screen.
  • Place remotes for electronic equipment so that they are accessible from a wheelchair

4. Notebook paper
