Dining/Living Room
This section should contain:
1. Simple floor plan noting:
- Width & length of room
- Whether doors open in or out
- Heights of counters, appliances, favorite chair (arms present) Width of doors (inside of frame)
- Width of doors (inside of frame)
- Flooring (wood, vinyl, carpet, tile) & presence of doorsill
- Lighting sources (overhead, lamps) and electrical outlets
It may be helpful to do this on graph paper to scale 1 square = ¼ foot.
2. Photos of room, especially entry/exit to other rooms, halls, halls, dining/den, etc.; appliances; and food preparation area.
3. Recommendation for Kitchen
(Individual assessment by a physical therapist or occupational therapist is important to assure all safety issues are addressed.)
- Install sinks and stove with open space below so a wheelchair can roll underneath (See ADA guidelines at www.jan.wvu.edu)
- If possible, stagger burners to eliminate burning the arm when reaching.
- Place commonly used items at a height that can be reached from wheelchair (adaptive equipment such as a "grabber" may be helpful).
- Design workspace between counters to accommodate wheelchair
- Design stretches of continuous counter tops to permit sliding of objects.
