Medical Conditions Related to Brain Injury: Seizures

Incase of Seizures

In the event of a seizure…

DO

  • Time the seizure
  • Stay with the person during seizure
  • Move him or her to a safe lying position (e.g. away from the edge of bed)
  • Turn head and body to one side if possible
  • Move things away that could cause injury
  • Loosen tight clothes or restraints, if possible
  • Call 911 if not familiar with the person’s medical history
  • Call 911 if the seizure lasts longer then 5 minutes
  • Call 911 if the person has another seizure

DON'T

  • Force the person’s mouth open
  • Put anything in the mouth
  • Try to restrain or stop movements
