Ten Questions To Ask Before Hiring A Case Manager

  1. Is the person licensed in their profession? (e.g. registered nurse, licensed professional counselor, certified rehabilitation counselor, licensed social worker etc.)
  2. How long have they practiced in case management? Specifically for people with brain injury?
  3. Can the person provide three professional resources? (families should follow up!)
  4. What will they provide for the fee they charge?
  5. What additional charges can be expected? (expenses such as travel, phone, office support, etc.)
  6. What is their billing process and expectation of bill payment? (Monthly? Quarterly? Accept credit cards?)
  7. What does the case manager feel he/she offers to the person with brain injury and their family?
  8. What is their availability - Hours? Days? Phone? Email? Fax?
  9. Based on their work load will they be able to adequately provide services?
  10. Is there a personal comfort level between the case manager, the person with brain injury and the family?

Lu Rae Ahrendt is a certified rehabilitation nurse and certified case manager. She provides catastrophic case management services and life care plans for children and adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses and has extensive experience in the development, coordination and implementation of plans of care for individuals with brain injuries. Ms. Ahrendt presents to numerous professional and disability support organizations. She is a current board member and former board chairperson for the Brain Injury Resource Foundation.
