What is a Private Case Manager?
Last Updated:
Private or independent case managers are healthcare professionals who provide case management services to individuals with chronic health problems or disabilities. The private case manager generally practices outside of a healthcare facility, insurance company or government agency.
Case Managers typically have specialty areas of practice such as pediatrics, chronic illness, rehabilitation, brain injury, and geriatrics. The specialty should be considered in selecting an appropriate case manager for a person with brain injury.
A private case manager usually charges an hourly rate with additional charges for expenses related to travel, phone, and office support services. Families and persons with brain injury should interview a prospective case manager before contracting his/her services.
Credentials, standards of practice, ethical standards and the role of a case manager may be found at the website for the Case Management Society of America.
